Tempe-based commercial electric contractor Code Electric recently installed a 50-kilowatt solar power system for the dealership - designing a series of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels that are positioned atop the center's parking shade structures. Final approval for the installation was recently given. The solar system is expected to generate up to 35% of the retail center's power during off-peak hours and will avoid greenhouse gas emissions of an estimated 1,180 metric tons over the next 20 years. "This is a visible example of the benefits of solar power and how easily it can be incorporated by businesses," said Mark Holohan, President of Code Electric. "Simply, and yet ingeniously, a shade structure for a parking lot has been turned into a clean, electric-power generating plant." Holohan credits owner Mercedes-Benz of Arrowhead owner Chuck Theisen with the vision and determination in making the new retail center the first luxury dealership in the world to have earned the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental (LEED) certification. In addition to the solar power system, the retail center features high performance insulating windows, recycled construction materials, energy management systems, low-energy lighting systems, an underground storm water system, a fresh air induction system and high-efficiency mechanical and water reclamation systems. Code Electric, founded in 1962, is a Tempe-based commercial electrical contractor. The company also provides design, construction, finance and consultation for the installation of solar photovoltaic systems. Recent projects include solar installations at the Phoenix Convention Center and the Maricopa County Buckeye Hills Park.
