Main | Why Solar? | Green Building | Photo Gallery | Institutions Symposium To Address Solar Power For Commercial And Institutional BuildingsA first-of-its-kind panel discussion will be held in Phoenix to discuss the application of solar photovoltaic (PV) electric power systems, as they relate to commercial buildings. Speakers will include Corporation Commissioner Kris Mayes, who will address Arizona's commitment to solar energy, and the initiatives already in place to encourage its adoption. Representatives from APS and SRP will identify the incentive programs that are available to commercial building owners. "We want commercial property owners to realize that solar power makes good economic business sense, in addition to being the right thing to do," said Terrence Plas of Arizona Commercial Solar, one of the presenting sponsors of the symposium. "With the combination of utility rebates, tax incentives, and long-term life expectancy of today's solar systems, it is an extremely effective way for building owners to lower their operating costs. It's not much of a sacrifice to be a good corporate citizen when industry efficiencies and new regulations make it so cost-effective." In addition to the economic discussion, Mark Holohan of Code Electric, another symposium sponsor, will share information on other advances in the industry. According to Holohan, there are a variety of commercial solar solutions that are also very aesthetic. Additionally, "there is a patented system that not only provides electricity from the sun, but also adds insulation to a building, furthering energy savings while at the same time protecting the roof membrane." Holohan says his company, Code Electric, is Arizona's sole commercial dealer for the exclusive system from SunPower Corporation of California. Other speakers will compare financing options that are currently available, such as whether it is better to lease or purchase a solar photovoltaic (PV) system, and the financial impacts on the property. "An entire financial industry has also formed that allows institutional users the option of using clean solar power, but with a $0 capital commitment," according to Plas. "It's important for commercial owners to realize that solar is a cost-competitive option for their business." Still other panelists will discuss the role of solar systems in a building's quest for LEED certification. As leading corporations have already paved the way by adopting renewable energy, architects, developers, and existing building owners are seeking ways to catch up. The meeting will be held at The Ritz Carlton on Wednesday, December 5, from 8:00-11:00 am, and is open to the public, but rsvps are required. You can sign up for the morning's events at www.arizonacommercialsolar.com.
